What is an Original Print?

An original print is an image produced from a block, plate, or stone upon which the artist has created an original design by hand. Each print from the block is signed and numbered and is considered an original work of art. Wood engravings, linocuts, and etchings are all examples of original prints.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I graduated from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1977 with a B.A. degree in art, and have been working full time as an artist since then. I currently reside in Sarasota, Florida.

Block printing has been my favorite medium since I first tried it in 1972. I cut or engrave the blocks under magnification, then ink and print them on a hand-operated press in my studio.

Wood engravings are printed from end-grain wood blocks with black ink. I hand-engrave my blocks using traditional wood engraving tools, then print them on 100% rag paper with an etching press. The engraved areas appear as white on the print. Wood engravings are generally small and highly detailed.

A reduction cut is a multicolored image printed from a single block. More of the surface of the block is cut away (reduced) for each color.  Each color is printed over the previous color. I use linoleum blocks for my reduction cuts.

Through my art, I hope to share my perception of the beauty and mystery of the visual world. My art is my poetry.

I have won numerous awards in juried art shows, including many best-in-show awards, and my works appear in private and corporate collections and galleries in the United States and abroad.
